Main functions
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) is a non-ionic cellulose ether used in cement-based and gypsum-based building materials.
- Water retention: reduces rapid moisture loss from mortar.
- Thickening and lubrication: adjusts consistency and makes mortar easier to mix, spread and trowel.
- Sag and slip resistance: helps wet mortar resist sagging and wall tiles resist slipping during installation.
- Longer open time: helps extend the time available to place tiles after the adhesive has been spread.
Common uses
HPMC is used in tile adhesives, plaster and masonry mortars, wall putty and gypsum products. It is also used in insulation mortars, repair mortars and grouts.
